Is there a digital nomad visa in Kosovo? No. Here are the alternatives
Why remote workers cannot simply stay in Kosovo for longer than 90 days, which routes exist instead and how income is taxed.
Checked on 25 October 2026 · General information, not legal advice.
As of October 2026, Kosovo has no digital nomad visa, and no special visa for retirees or investors either. Here is what that means if you work remotely, and which routes exist instead.
The 90-day rule
Citizens of the EU, the UK and Switzerland can enter Kosovo without a visa and stay for up to 90 days within 180 days. Kosovo counts these days independently of the Schengen area. A short trip abroad does not reset the count, and trying it can get you turned away at the border. If you want to stay longer, you need a residence permit, and you must apply before your 90 days run out.
Within three days of arrival, you must register your address with the police. You can do this at the border, at a police station or online, including through the Kosovo Police app. If you stay in a hotel, the hotel registers you. Since 15 March 2026, the authorities enforce this strictly, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs warns that breaches lead to an entry ban.
Can you work remotely during those 90 days?
Kosovo’s Ministry of Internal Affairs states that foreigners may not work during a short stay without a work permit. It does not say whether this also covers remote work for a foreign employer or for your own clients abroad. If you plan to work from Kosovo, ask a licensed lawyer first.
Why remote work is not a route to residence
The Law on Foreigners grants temporary residence for family reunification, education and research, employment and humanitarian reasons, plus a discretionary clause for other purposes. There is no category for remote work. For a residence permit for employment, the ministry requires an employment contract under Kosovo labour law. The only exception is a foreigner who owns a business in Kosovo.
The realistic alternatives
- Your own company: if you own a company registered in Kosovo, you can apply for a residence permit for employment without an employment contract. Among other documents, you need the business registration certificate.
- Employment: with a contract from an employer in Kosovo that complies with Kosovo labour law.
- Family: if your spouse is a Kosovo citizen or holds residence in Kosovo. In 2022, 44% of all temporary residence permits were issued for family reunification. Only employment was more common, at 48%.
- Studies: with an admission to a university in Kosovo.
- Other purposes: a discretionary clause that accounted for only about 2% of permits in 2022.
Which route fits your case is a legal question for a licensed lawyer in Kosovo.
Income tax at a glance
Since 23 August 2024, personal income tax in Kosovo is 0% on annual taxable income up to €3,000, 8% on the part between €3,000 and €5,400, and 10% on everything above that. Whether and where you are taxable depends on your residence and is a question for a tax adviser.
